Freeway Interchange, from Roll 77-68

It has been overcast and rainy over the past week, no chances to shoot.

12/25/77
I am sitting here recording Neil Young's Decade and Rick Wakeman at the same time, they are playing the new Rick Wakeman album on the KWST Sunday Review of Records.

I finally got a half roll shot yesterday, the Sun came out for the first time in a week, but the Shadows were Sh*t. Today it rained, I am on roll number 77-68. I had hoped to shoot 77 rolls of film this year, but I have lost 1 1/2 weeks, with only one week left in the year, and its still raining. I have decided that if my new job hinders my photography at all, I will have to look for a new job. So I will rent the cheapest possible place. (I have long since discovered that any job will always hinder my photography.)

12/28/77
I came down sick yesterday and called in sick today. A Sh*tty rainy day again. No Let-up. I will shoot a roll tommorrow during lunch even if it is raining.

Two hours until midnight, this will be my last entry in 1977. I never shot that roll on 12/29/77 because I forgot my camera. Yesterday, the sun came out for the first time since I have been working in La Crescenta. We got off at 1:00PM, so I went to the interchange between the Glandale and the Foothill Freeways. It is not complete yet. (The Freeway Interchange was not complete yet) I got some good shots on my final roll of 1977. Roll number 77-69.
In 1978 I hope to:
Shoot 100+ rolls of B+W (2 per week)
Shoot 10+ rolls of Kodachrome or Color (1 per month)
Get another Nikon Body
Get a decent Darkroom
Get a View Camera and Tripod
Complete Portfolios and organize portfolios
Standardize Final Prints and Filing Set-up
Get a Fireproof Safe to protect my Negatives
Have a Gallery Show
Have a Photobook published
Produce 3 or 4 Photobooks (new material only)
In 1977 I:
Shot 69 Rolls of B+W (2100 negatives)
Shot 5 rolls of Kodachrome or Color
Perfected Shooting and Printing techniques
Experimented and Completed a High Quality Finished Product
Completed shooting for a third Photobook Trauma
Hopefully picked-up a few followers
Book and Concept Book idea foundations

1977 - Happy New Year - 1978
01/01/78
Weather was good, but when I finally left to shoot, it got hazy and overcast. Maybe tommorrow. I took only one picture.

01-06-78
Today is Friday, I rented an apartment and will be moving tommorrow. On Monday of this week (01-02-78), I went out to shoot but it was too overcast. The sun shined through the haze, enough to produce Shadows, so I went to that school on Yorktown street, between Brookhurst and Ward. Its been rainy since, and no chances to shoot. Last night, I printed from 77-66, 67, 68, and 69 for the first time. I also printed from 77-38 for the first time, because it was a re-rolled to shot number 25, or negative number 37. Then I shot off the last nine shots in late December 1977. Re-rolling means that I was partially through a roll, the rewound the film back into the cassette, leaving a leader. I then write the last exposure number and tape it to the cassette. Later, I re-insert the cassette into the camera, then advance the film to be one exposure past the number on the tape.

I shots some photos of a Dam on Tuesday during my lunch hour. Otherwise I have been very depressed and came to the conclusion that I have been fooling myself with this new job. Sure, it pays good but wouldn't it be better if I was working in Photography. My stomach has really been bothering me this past week too. This week-end I am going to see into Art Center's photo program. I am still working on roll 78-01 due to the bad weather.

Today is Saturday. I went out this morning and shot all morning. It was the best shooting day of the year so-far. I went up Lankersham to San Fernando, over to Vineland and down Vineland back to my apartment. I shot: The end of roll 78-04, all of 78-05 and started on 78-06. Last Sunday (01/15/78), I went to the swap meet with Scott from Art Photo Class, and we shot pictures there. Since it was my last class meeting coming up, I decided to shoot some "Paople" shots for her. (Martha Rosler, the Instructor) The Swap Meet shots are the end of roll 78-02 and 78-03. At the class meeting on 01/19, I showed the people pictures and gave a set of reject prints to Scott. I got alot out of that class, I will miss it. On Wednesday 01/18, I shot pictures during lunch hour, and also snuck my camera to work. (Sewage Plant) (On the days that I had to work the sewage plant, I was alone most of the day) After lunch, I shot shots of the plant.

I went to the Art Center in Pasadena to take one night class. Instead of being quiet and withdrawn during class, try to be upfront and challenging during class. If I decide to go full time next semester, I will want to "Blow-em-away" like I did at O.C.C. It will be harder to do it there because it is a four year school with more serious people going there.

I wish that I could drive myself hard like I did from September through December (1977), when I took Sila's class and did the Pinballs. It gave me stomach problems. Then I would go to the Art Institute full time and work.
